If you’ve ever read the book, “The $64 Tomato: How One Man Nearly Lost His Sanity, Spent a Fortune, and Endured an Existential Crisis in the Quest for the Perfect Garden” you will understand the title of this post.
I have a small vegetable garden planted this year with four varieties of tomatoes, potatoes, spinach, asparagus, lettuces, beets, carrots, onions, sweet peppers, hot peppers, eggplant and zucchini.
In addition, I have lots of perennial gardens.
All that is the good part. The evil part is everything that seems to want to attack all that: deer, rabbits, moles, voles, aphids, Japanese beetles to name a few. What seems to work on these:
- Coyote Urine. Sounds disgusting, smells even worse than it sounds. But, it seems to work against deer. You pour the nasty stuff into small plastic tubes with holes in them and then hang them every 12 feet around your garden.
- Onions, Allium and Russian Sage. My vegetable garden has a row of onions around it. That seems to keep rabbits out. Deer are turned off by the Allium and Russian Sage.
- Liquid Fence. This is the nastiest smelling stuff around and sort of negates the lovely smell of roses and peonies but it does go away after the initial spray and it works.
